LIfe Without Knowing the Rules - 19394 - FYS 100 - 0
Have you ever driven down the highway and suddenly run into a blockage that dissipates instantly a mile later with no apparent cause? In this course, we will see how completely independent agents (cars on a highway, insects, people, organizations) can interact in what appears to be "group think" even though no one individual is in control. We will see how the emerging science of Complexity can explain real-world problems including world economics, the reality behind networks, how to survive in a very crowded space, how people react when others force control on them, and why our government actually works!

Utopian and Dystopian Visions - 19395 - FYS 100 - 0
From Plato's Republic to The Hunger Games and Brave New World, we are fascinated by the possibilities and dangers of imagined social orders. This course looks at works of film, literature, politics, and philosophy to understand the distinctive place of utopian and dystopian visions in our political imagination. What do images of these political and social extremes tell us about our ideals of justice and freedom, about the choices that confront us as citizens now, and about what it means to be human? We will also explore concepts such as the state of nature, environmentalism, technology and science, the relationship between art and politics, gender, and religion.
